Kobe Earthquake Museum

kobe8398

The Kobe Earthquake Museum is the short version of The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Museum which is part of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institute.

kobe8385

It is near the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art along the waterfront in Kobe.

kobe8386

It was designed by Showa Sekkei, who also designed the nearby Fashion Museum and opened in 2002.

kobe8390

Supposedly the unusual double-skinned glass structure is built to withstand an earthquake of any magnitude..

Ando's Spiral Staircase revisited

kobe8349

One of the features of Tadao Ando's Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is the exterior spiral staircase.

kobe8352

I posted some other photos of it previously here

kobe8354

Spiral staircases are extremely easy to take good photos of...... its in their nature....

kobe8357

But I was also fortunate to catch it with some strong light and shadows....

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art part 2

kobe8344

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe is usually pictured from the sea front, but the entrance is at the back of ther building on the road and while it is less dramatic it is also interesting.

kobe8359

Photos of thye front can be found here

kobe8360

It was designed by tadao Ando and opened in 2002.

kobe8364

The museums collection is of modern art, both japanese and foreign, with special emphasis on sculpture and prints.

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art revisited

kobe8326

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art sits on the waterfront in Kobe and was constructed in 2002 as part of the cities post-earthquake revitalization.

kobe8327

Earlier I posted on one of the features of the architecture, the spiral staircase

kobe8329

The museum primarily consists of 3 glass structures each with an overhanging roof. The 3 structures are set on a base of white granite with steps that lead down to the waterfront.

kobe8333

The museum was designed by Tadao Ando and has more than a passing resemblance to his Fort Worth Museum he built a little later.

kobe8241

Sun Hiroba is the name of the atrium-like space in the middle of the Kobe Fashion Plaza complex.

kobe8232

It's 50 meters across and rises to a height of 40 meters.

kobe8237

The Kobe fashion Plaza was designed by Showa Sekkei and opened in 1997.

kobe8244

It is located on Rokko Island, the largest man-made island off Kobe.

kobe8226

It opened in 1997 and was designed by Show Sekkei.

Some views of Kobe in yellow

kobe8084

A series of 4 manhole covers from the city of Kobe.

kobe8184

Located an a narrow strip of land between the sea and the mountains.

kobe8119

The top left design shows the Kobe Port Tower and the Maritime Museum, both of which I have bloogged about previously. The top-right design shows the port of Kobe.

kobe8174

The view from Meriken Park

kobe8131

More views of the tower, one of the ropeways up Rokko Mountain, the bridge to Rokko Island, and various other sights I have no idea what...

Marine Hall, a wedding chapel.

kobe8170

Marine Hall is one of 2 wedding chapels at the Meriken Park Oriental Hotel in Kobe.

kobe8160

Rather than go for the "traditional" architecture of Japanese wedding chapels that look like sets from a Takarazuka performance, the design is based on the form of a seashell.

kobe8169

Built in 1995 and designed by the Takenaka Company, the roof is 14 metres above ground.

kobe8162

Nearby is the Kobe Maritime Museum and the Kobe Port Tower, and so makes for a nice cluster of interesting architecture

Kobe Maritime Museum

kobe8137

The Kobe Maritime Museum is located in Meriken Park next to the Kobe Port Tower.

kobe8142

Built in 1987, and designed by the cities Harbor Maintenance Group, it's most dominating feature is the roof constructed of white pipe in the form of sails.

kobe8145

I didn't go inside, but I've heard that as maritime museums go it's not that great, the displays being nearly all models and not real boats.

kobe8147

It's open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday thru Sunday, and entrance is 600 yen for adults, 300 for kids.

kobe8157

While I was there a storm approached and the dark cluds gave me a dramatic background for the photos.

Kobe Port Tower

kobe8189

Opened in 1963, the Kobe Port Tower soon became a symbol of the city of Kobe.

kobe8159

Designed by the Nikken Sekkei Company, the design is based on a Japanes drum, the Tsuzumi, and was the first tower built using a pipe lattice.

kobe8158

The tower is 108 metres high, and the observation platform is at 90 metres.

kobe8156

The tower is open every day of the year and entrance is 600 yen.
